How we work

A plain-English guide to what happens from your first message to your first session, and what to expect after that.

We do not publish clinician names or biographies while the team is growing, so this page does the job an “about us” page usually does. It sets out how the practice works, how we match you with a psychologist, and what you can expect at each stage, so you know what you are choosing before you commit to anything.

Getting started

Everything begins with a short set of questions through our get-started form. You will be asked what is bringing you here, a little about your circumstances, and some standard safeguarding questions we ask everyone, not because anything you have said suggests a problem, but because it is good practice to check. It takes around three minutes, and there is no obligation to continue afterwards.

Our clinical team reviews what you have shared and matches you with the psychologist in our team best placed to help, based on the difficulties you have described and the kind of approach you are looking for. We aim to reply within 24 hours on working days with a proposed first appointment.

Assessment

The first one or two sessions are usually an assessment. Your psychologist will ask about what has brought you to therapy now, some background on your history, and what you would like to be different. This is a conversation, and you are free to say as much or as little as feels right at each stage.

Formulation

From the assessment, your psychologist builds a shared understanding, sometimes called a formulation, of what is keeping the difficulty going and what might help. This is discussed with you directly rather than delivered as a verdict, and it usually shapes which therapy is suggested and what the early sessions will focus on.

Treatment

Sessions are 50 minutes, usually weekly, delivered by secure video. The content varies depending on the approach: some therapies are structured with an agenda and things to try between sessions, others give more space to talk things through. Your psychologist will explain what to expect from the approach they are suggesting, and you can ask questions at any point.

Review

Progress is reviewed at agreed points rather than left open-ended. That might mean checking in on how things have changed, adjusting the plan, or agreeing that the work is done. Therapy with us is not an indefinite commitment, and ending well is treated as part of the process.

What to expect from an online session

You will receive a secure video link ahead of each appointment. Sessions run much like an in-person appointment would: your psychologist will check in, follow up on anything from the previous session, and work through whatever is on the agenda that week. If a connection drops, your psychologist will have a plan for reconnecting or, if needed, continuing by phone.

Confidentiality

What you discuss in sessions is confidential between you and your psychologist, with the usual professional exceptions that apply to any UK-regulated psychologist: a risk to your safety or someone else’s, or a legal requirement to disclose. Where those exceptions might apply, your psychologist will normally discuss this with you first. You can read the full detail in our privacy policy.

Who this isn’t right for

We work with adults, and we do not offer therapy for children or young people. If you are supporting a child or teenager, your GP or school can point you towards local NHS child and adolescent mental health services.

We also do not offer a crisis or emergency service. If you are in immediate danger or thinking about acting on thoughts of harming yourself, please contact your GP, call 999, or speak to the Samaritans on 116 123, available free, 24 hours a day. Our get-started questionnaire includes safeguarding questions for this reason, so we can direct you to the right kind of support if planned weekly therapy is not the safest option for you right now.

Funding your sessions

Most clients pay for sessions themselves. If you are hoping to use health insurance instead, tell us during the get-started questions and we can talk through what your policy is likely to need. Fees and payment are set out in full on our pricing page.

If you have read all of this and still have questions, the quickest way to ask is to get started or email us.
